Many will recognize the feeling. You’re getting ready for work, open your wardrobe, and can’t find anything to wear. It sounds pretty crazy because you know you have more than enough clothes. Yet this happens regularly and can also be explained from a psychological perspective. In this article, I will tell you why, and I’ll give you tips on how you can make a choice quickly.
This is why you have nothing to wear
Authors of a 2016 study, Jordan Etkin (Duke University) and Aner Sela (University of Florida) discovered why we sometimes feel like we have nothing to wear. It turns out it has nothing to do with the number of clothes we own, but with the way we handle them. The researchers concluded that “when people perceived more variation in a product’s use cases, they liked the product less.”
So, for example, if you buy a blouse for a party and wear it only then, you will enjoy it more than if you wear it every day. With daily use, the product, in this case, the blouse, loses its unique property. We are no longer excited by it and therefore find the garment boring.
However, this is not always the reason. If you often make impulse purchases, the clothes in your closet may not match well, and it can be difficult to put a nice outfit together. You first need several basic items of clothing so you can make combinations more easily.
How to solve the problem
I often feel like I have nothing to wear, and I even have a walk-in closet. So there is no shortage of clothing. When this feeling comes over me, I always focus on accessories. I choose a pair of suspenders, tie or necklace that I like to wear. I use this as a starting point for my outfit. I combine clothes with my accessory and not the other way round.
My experience is that doing this forces me to make new combinations. And so you can sometimes unexpectedly surprise yourself.
