Something I often hear people say: black and brown should not be worn together. I know plenty of men who, for example, have to combine their brown shoes with a brown belt and matching watch strap. But why is this? And what does it look like when you break this “fashion rule” and combine brown and black?

How to combine brown and black in one outfit

As I have a lot of black clothes in my closet I thought it would be nice to combine these with my new, brown Pertini shoes.

Last week I did just this. I wore my new loafers for three days in three different ways. Curious? In this article, I’ll show you the outfits and explain how I put these combinations together.

Matching piece

First, I went searching for a piece of clothing that contains both black and brown. This is, of course, the easiest way to start, as you can go both ways: you can wear it with black or brown shoes.

My floral blouse has black as the base color but also contains many other colors. Dark brown is also there, but subtly. This is a simple trick to ensure the whole outfit ties together.

Because the shoes have gold-colored buckles, I have reflected this in my earrings. In doing so, the shoes not only match my clothes but also my jewelry.

Matching accessory

In the photos above, I have matched the shoes with a pair of braces. Because I wear the braces over a black blouse, the color is less noticeable, but if you look closely, you will see it.

I also find the combination of brown shoes with gray and checks wonderfully classic. The only things I am missing are some curlers and a great whiskey!

Shift attention

As much as I like my new shoes, they don’t always have to be the center of attention. With this outfit, I emphasized my brown tie. The contrast with the white blouse makes the tie stand out and the complete outfit looks businesslike.

Even here I have used the gold-colored buckles in my jewelry. Besides earrings, I also wore a pair of matching cufflinks.

After my three-day black and brown experiment, I can only conclude one thing: these two shades go well together. So don’t let anyone tell you any different and remember your style is something to keep experimenting with.
