The difference between a softshell jacket and a regular jacket
When people ask me what a softshell jacket is, I always describe it as an in-between jacket. A softshell is not as thin as a vest but also not as thick as most (winter) jackets. It often feels soft, which makes sense given the name. Softshell roughly translates to “soft outer layer.” But there are more characteristics.
- It is made of breathable fabric.
- The material is water-repellent.
- Little to no wind penetrates it, making it warm.
- The fit is close to the body without feeling tight.
- It is lighter in weight than a regular jacket.
Example jackets
Most softshell jackets meet the above characteristics, but there are exceptions. Just like regular jackets, there are countless models. Here are a few examples.
The above model has a sporty appearance. It features reflective stripes, and you can choose to buy it with fluorescent details. This is a typical example of a softshell made for people who work outdoors and need to be highly visible.
This may look like a regular work jacket, but it is also sold as a softshell. Most producers of high-visibility clothing now have this type of model in their collection.
This long model looks more like a regular jacket you could buy in fashion stores. They are often sold there too. The advantage of this softshell is its small, functional details. For example, you can cinch the waist with a cord, and the cuffs are adjustable.
When is a softshell jacket useful?
This type of jacket is ideal if you work outside and sweat quickly. Think of people doing outdoor jobs or painting. The softshell protects against the cold without multiple thick layers of fabric. Due to its lightweight and snug fit, it also allows for good movement. That’s why they’re also popular among people who enjoy hiking in their free time. I grab my softshell when I take my dog to the forest or want to work in the garden. It’s an ideal piece of clothing.
