It is one of the biggest annoyances for pregnant women at work: ill-fitting workwear. They are often forced to wear oversized clothing simply because their belly is growing. But this makes the clothing too loose in other areas, causing them to snag more easily and increasing the risk of tripping.
That’s why Dovetail Workwear has developed overalls and work pants for pregnant women. In this article, I’ll show you what they look like and tell you all about them.
With child doesn’t mean without work
Opening the Dovetail website, you immediately see a pregnant woman dressed in an overall. The accompanying text reads: “Work like a mother. With child doesn’t mean without work.”
This message hits home right away. Despite every body and every pregnancy being different, it is still too often assumed that women cannot work during this period. This was evident in the reactions I received a few years ago when I wrote an article about high-visibility clothing for pregnant women (Dutch). Two groups emerged: one believed that women should not do physical work during pregnancy, while the working group expressed a need for such clothing.
I believe that every pregnant woman should be able to decide for herself whether and what kind of work she does. If she feels well enough, she should be able to do the work she wants to do. And if there are doubts, a doctor can provide advice. But ultimately, it is her body, and she should decide how to manage her life.
Pregnant women can now work in an overall that grows with them
For pregnant women who want to keep working, whether inside or outside the home, Dovetail has developed an overall. The model features elastic fabric at the hips, allowing plenty of room for the belly to grow. Meanwhile, there are enough pockets to carry your belongings, and knee pads can be inserted. It’s clear that comfort and work can go hand in hand.
In addition to the overall, the brand also sells pants for pregnant women and various T-shirts with fun texts. Slogans like “Get dirty,” “Dirt loves me,” and specifically for mothers, “Work like a mother.”
Prices range from $29 for a T-shirt and $89 for maternity pants to $139 for the growing overall. Unfortunately, the Dovetail Workwear webshop only ships to customers within the United States. If you live outside the US, I recommend using a search engine. The brand is also available through other online stores. And that’s a good thing.
Because whether it’s paid or unpaid work, mothers have always worked and will continue to do so. They deserve good workwear just as much as anyone else.
Best regards,
