The new clothing package for British McDonald’s hasn’t been received well. The headquarters calls the new uniforms ‘fantastic,’ but employees are slightly less enthusiastic. There’s talk of ’the ugliest uniform ever,’ and some employees are even threatening to quit. What exactly is going on here? Let’s dive in.

A few days ago, a woman posted images of the new company uniforms on TikTok. The photos show how the clothing was presented to the staff. Mannequins with blouses and shirts, and tables with accessories like headbands, belts, ties, and scarves. Employees could use smileys at the tables to indicate what they thought of the new package.

The idea behind the new clothing package is that each employee can choose their own clothing. That’s why the styles vary greatly. From formal blouses, scarves, and ties to simple T-shirts, hats, and caps. According to the restaurant chain, comfort and durability are central.

Although you would expect employees to be happy with so much choice, they are actually angry. They find the new clothing package impractical. Complaints include white shoes in the kitchen, while others think it’s a joke. Kitchens get dirty quickly, and stains show up on white. It’s said that McDonald’s sacrificed practical elements for style. But the choice of style is also not understood. They think it looks more like streetwear than what you’d expect from a fast-food chain.

Employees anticipate it will be difficult to attract staff with this clothing. Some are even considering resigning after seeing the new plans.

Looking at what the employees are currently wearing, it’s understandable. The old clothing package, worn since 2016, is mainly grey with some yellow details. The blouses, shirts, aprons, and caps are fairly traditional in style. It’s clear it’s workwear.

And that’s exactly what went wrong with the new clothing: it’s not recognizable as workwear. The logos are small, and the colors are so different that it will be difficult to recognize the staff. Yet, that’s crucial.

When will McDonald’s employees wear the new uniform?

The new clothing will soon be tested in some branches in England and Ireland. McDonald’s expects all restaurant staff to wear the new clothing by 2025. I’m curious to see if that will actually happen. Is the criticism short-lived, or will the clothing not pass the test? I’ll keep you posted…

Greetings,

Aileen
