These socks are a global phenomenon in health care

The story of these unique socks starts with the American Nick Adkins. He attended Burning Man for the first time in 2010, a yearly summer festival organised in Nevada. There is a whole philosophy behind Burning Man that I don’t want to explain in detail, but one of its principles is that people give each other things without wanting anything in return. It could be food, a bracelet or a hug. The gesture, the new connection  between people and the fact that you make someone happy are all foundations of this trend. The acceptance of a present is considered a gift from the recipient to the person giving it.

More socks

Eventually he went to an event in Chicago, that had a focus on people working in health care. He ended up in a hall full of people in suits, where his bright pink socks of course stood out. People approached him and asked why he was wearing them. He spoke to a lot of people and gave them all a pair of the same socks. The visitors of the conference started using the hashtag pinksocks on social media and his deed went viral.

After a year of events and handing out socks, he lost the passion. Until he received a Twitter message from someone saying that a group of people in The Netherlands are handing out socks to create awareness for Alzheimer and dementia. He also heard about people in Wales handing out socks to raise awareness for Ataxia, a rare disease. At that moment, he realized his deed was taken over by other people.

Meanwhile, the popularity of these pink socks in health care is still rapidly growing. They are used in India to raise awareness for breast exams and even Deepak Chopra received a pair. In The Netherlands, Princess Laurentien and Minister of Health Care Hugo de Jonge have received a few of them. And some people even make ties out of them.

Ordering socks

In case you’d like to give away a pair of these socks: you can order them on the website of pinksocks. They cost about five dollars a pair and the box you order contains 12 pairs. So in total it costs you sixty dollar, without shipping costs. Besides, no profit is being generated of these socks. The money you pay is solely used to cover expenses. This way, the socks are affordable, so as many people as possible can make others happy AND raise awareness for health care at the same time.
