Festive Dress Code

This is a dress code you’ll often see around the holidays or at anniversaries. The name says it all: the outfit should have a festive appearance.

For men, think of smart trousers with a jacket or waistcoat in a cheerful print, possibly made from shiny or velour fabrics. Women can easily opt for a festive or cocktail dress, and a pop of color is definitely appropriate. With this dress code, there’s plenty of room for colors, prints, and glitter. As long as it’s clear you’re here to celebrate.

What to Wear to a Company Party with a Business Casual Dress Code

These days, many companies have relaxed their office dress codes. A neat pair of jeans or sneakers is no longer unusual. For more informal corporate parties, this casual approach often extends to the dress code: business casual.

Business Casual – for the more informal company party

Business casual loosely translates to a style that’s both casual and neat. It falls somewhere in between. It’s not as laid-back as jeans with a sweatshirt and sneakers, but also not as formal as a suit or evening gown.

For men, think of chinos or other smart trousers paired with a shirt. Both clean sneakers and dress shoes work here. Women can choose a dress, skirt, smart trousers, or a jumpsuit. If you’re unsure, it’s best to wear one casual item and keep the rest businesslike. For example, a plain pair of jeans combined with dress shoes, a shirt, and a blazer. Or sporty shoes under tailored trousers with a shirt and waistcoat.

Want to add a festive touch? Go for statement earrings, a brooch, or a bow tie.

Business Dress Code: Tenue de Ville (City Chic)

When an invitation says Tenue de ville, the dress code is slightly more formal than business casual. It’s a mix of chic and professional. These dress codes are usually used for events held during the day or early evening.

Men are best off wearing a dark suit with a tie, and women can go for a skirt suit or a dress. As for skirt length, knee-length or mid-calf (also called midi-length) is appropriate. The style should be elegant and neat, not too flashy or revealing.

Prefer wearing trousers as a woman? Then a suit is a great option, just like the men, although a tie isn’t necessary.

What to Wear to a Company Party: Cocktail Dress Code

The cocktail dress code is somewhat similar to Tenue de ville, but usually a bit more playful because more is allowed. You’ll often see this dress code at company events in the evening.

ust like with Tenue de ville, men wear a dark suit, but a tie isn’t required. For women, a knee-length cocktail dress (or just above the knee) is the go-to choice. If you search online for inspiration, you’ll quickly find the term “cocktail dress for women,” which refers to elegant, festive dresses that perfectly suit this dress code. The outfits are elegant and celebratory, with more room for glamour. Think eye-catching jewelry and evening makeup.

Black Tie as a Business Dress Code

So, what to wear to a company party when the dress code is Black Tie? Stick to classic elegance. Whether you’re going for a tuxedo or a floor-length gown, make sure your outfit reflects the formal nature of the event.

Men wear a tuxedo, and women wear a long evening gown or an elegant dress. Gowns for galas are all about elegance, so choose a style that matches the atmosphere of the event.

Not Sure About the Business Dress Code for the Company Party?

Have you received the invitation but still unsure about what the dress code really means? The best option is to ask a colleague who has attended similar events before. They usually know exactly what people wear and can tell you whether your outfit fits in. You could even take a photo of yourself in your chosen outfit and show it to them for feedback.

Find it difficult to ask for advice this way? You can always consult an etiquette expert. They can give you personalized advice based on your company, your role, and the type of dress code being used.

Best,
Aileen
