New Lufthansa uniforms by Hugo Boss: what do they look like?

After nearly 25 years, Lufthansa staff have received new Lufthansa uniforms, developed by Hugo Boss. In this article, I will show you the old and the new uniform and explain everything about it.

Old Lufthansa uniform

For a long time, staff of the German airline worked in a dark blue suit, combined with white blouses and shirts. The uniform featured subtle yellow details that reflect the company’s logo.

On Thursday, 23 April, Lufthansa launched the new uniform to mark the company’s 100th anniversary.

If you prefer to see the collection in a video, you can watch the video below that I shared on social media. Prefer to keep reading? Scroll down to read the article.

The new uniforms were presented through a fashion show in which models walked out of an aircraft. The collection consists of 40 items that can all be combined.

“Our new uniform is much more than just clothing; it is an expression of our identity and a promise to our guests worldwide. It is our calling card and stands for quality, reliability and the unmistakable style that our passengers experience during every journey with Lufthansa,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa.

Criticism of new Lufthansa uniforms by Hugo Boss

The unmistakable style the CEO refers to is clearly visible. In fact, it is difficult to distinguish the new uniforms from the old ones. That is exactly the criticism the launch has received on social media. People do not see much difference and had expected a more innovative design.

There are differences, but you have to look closely. A cape has been added to the collection, male crew members now wear a dark shirt instead of white, and the women’s jacket closes slightly higher. Women also no longer wear a classic pencil skirt, but a wrap-style design. They now receive a belt with both trousers and skirts, whereas previously only men were given a belt.

Another point of criticism concerns the collaboration with Hugo Boss. The brand is currently known for formal wear such as suits. However, during the Second World War, it was involved in producing nazi uniforms. If you would like to read more about this, I recently wrote an article about research into Hugo Boss’ past and its connection to SS uniforms.

Cabin crew reactions to the new Lufthansa uniforms

I have received mixed reactions from Lufthansa cabin crew. Some find the design beautiful and timeless, while others raise concerns. Crew members say the new uniforms use a thicker fabric, which feels uncomfortable during warm days. They also say the company asked too few questions to female staff about what they want to wear. In particular, women with curves say the new garments do not fit well.

The German airline plans to introduce the uniforms in the fourth quarter of 2026. In practice, this will likely take longer. New staff receive an initial clothing set when they join the company. Only after three years do employees receive a monthly allowance to purchase additional items. That amount often does not cover replacing everything in time, and certainly not all at once.

I do not know the exact amount of the monthly allowance, but a cabin crew member told me that the new Boss items cost between €60 and €130. In addition, staff must buy their own shoes, and female staff must also purchase their own pantyhose.

There is now a new clothing collection, but it remains unclear when we will actually see it in practice. At the same time, the limited changes work in its favor: the old and new collections match well together.
