The origins of National Uniform Day
National Uniform Day was created several years ago in the United States by various organisations involved in the uniform industry. The idea behind it is to recognise and honour the people who wear a uniform for their work. Think of doctors, military personnel, police officers and paramedics. They all dedicate their careers to helping others and deserve some extra appreciation for what they do.
Although the initiative started in the United States, it has since grown into a day that is celebrated around the world. Companies and individuals across Europe and Asia have also embraced National Uniform Day.
I think it is wonderful to see this day becoming more widely recognised. I have now been writing about workwear, uniforms and PPE for more than twelve years. During that time, I have seen how strongly people can identify with the uniform they wear. A uniform represents a service, a profession or an area of expertise that is shared with the world. It creates a certain feeling, both for the wearer and for the people around them. That is exactly why I believe it deserves a special day.
How to get involved in National Uniform Day
Anyone connected to uniforms can take part in National Uniform Day. This includes the people who wear uniforms, as well as those who design, manufacture, decorate, distribute or provide them to employees. There are many ways to celebrate the day, both online and offline.
Employees and employers
Do you wear a uniform and want to support National Uniform Day on social media? Then this is the perfect opportunity to take a great photo with your colleagues at work. Show people what you do, or simply highlight how much you enjoy working with your team.
For employers, this is a great moment to show appreciation for your hardworking employees. You could share a photo on social media, but you can also celebrate in the workplace itself. Treat your team to lunch, surprise them with flowers or write a personal thank-you card to let them know how much they are appreciated.
Designers, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors of uniforms
For commercial companies within the uniform industry, National Uniform Day is an excellent opportunity to celebrate the people they have dressed over the years. Share photos of employees receiving their uniforms for the first time or wearing them on the job. While it is also a chance to showcase your company, the focus should always remain on the people behind the uniforms.
Online retailers and wholesalers could celebrate the day by offering special promotions on selected products. Looking for something more personal? Send a small gift to your regular customers, such as a cake decorated for National Uniform Day or a newly introduced garment from your collection.
If you enjoy sharing your expertise, consider organising a webinar for customers or visiting textile and fashion schools to introduce young people to the uniform industry.
Industry associations, trade unions and interest groups
For industry associations, trade unions and other organisations, National Uniform Day is the perfect opportunity to recognise the people you represent. Share a collage of photos featuring people in uniform, highlight memorable events or achievements from the past year, and use these stories to put the spotlight on everyone who helped make them possible.
Support National Uniform Day
If you are taking part in National Uniform Day on social media, don’t forget to include #NationalUniformDay in your post. Curious to see how companies celebrated the day in previous years or looking for inspiration? Then visit the official National Uniform Day website.
Companies can also register free of charge as official supporters of National Uniform Day. By doing so, they show their support for the initiative and help raise awareness of the millions of people who proudly wear a uniform every day.
