Malaysia Airlines uniforms: from vintage kabayas to today’s iconic look
Since its establishment, Malaysia Airlines has dressed its female cabin crew in the kabaya. This traditional garment, which originated in Indonesia in the 15th century, has since spread to Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Thailand, Cambodia, and the southern Philippines. Typically, people wear the kabaya at formal events or on special occasions when they want to make a strong impression.

1963 cabin crew uniform: red kabaya

Until 1967, the cabin crew wore this chili-red kabaya, paired with a skirt (sarung wiron) featuring nine vertical pleats.

In 1967, this brown uniform with a yellow print was introduced for international flights.
Cabin crew uniforms in 1972: new name, new look

When Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) was renamed Malaysian Airlines System (MAS), it was the perfect occasion for a new uniform. This time, the choice was a dark, plain skirt.
1976 Malaysia Airlines cabin crew uniform

The introduction of the C-10 aircraft inspired yet another uniform redesign. The green, yellow, and blue combination symbolized the “youthful exuberance and energy of the airline, Malaysia’s lush natural wealth, and the peaceful coexistence of its diverse population.”
Flight attendant outfits in 1986: batik and local heritage

In 1986, students from the School of Fashion Design at the Institute of Technology MARA designed the new uniform. They incorporated Malaysian batik and Sarawakian kelarai elements, making the uniform a striking visual ode to Malaysia’s rich and diverse heritage.
1992 Gherardini design

In 1992, the Italian fashion house Gherardini created a renewed version of the kabaya uniform. The color palette was slightly different, featuring yellow and purple flowers unique to Malaysia.

Since 1992, Malaysia Airlines has updated the uniform by adding new floral elements such as champak, jasmine, and hibiscus. These additions enhanced the original design and brought even more cultural richness to the look.

In my opinion, Malaysia Airlines continues to lead the way with some of the most beautiful uniforms in the aviation industry. Unlike many other airlines, they confidently break away from standard color schemes. At the same time, they remain deeply connected to their cultural roots and traditions. The result?
