japanese maekake aprons: why this traditional workwear is becoming popular

Japanese Maekake aprons have been a well-known type of workwear in Japan for centuries, but they are currently growing into an international success. How did Japanese Maekake aprons originate, and why have they become so popular right now?

The history of the Maekake apron

The Maekake apron, which means “hanging in front,” originated in the fifteenth century. The apron, tied around the waist, was used to protect clothing from dirt during work. It was made from thick cotton threads.

Throughout history, several variations of Japanese Maekake aprons have existed, but people have worn the current model since the Edo period (1603–1868). During this time, workers used the apron in many different places and for various types of jobs. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), businesses started painting text and logos onto the aprons, turning them into a form of workwear. This allowed people to immediately see where someone worked while simultaneously advertising the company.

After the war, around 1950, the Japanese economy started to grow and more businesses emerged. This growth also increased the popularity of Japanese Maekake aprons. Workers wore them in rice shops, miso stores, soy sauce shops, fertilizer stores, and food manufacturing companies.

The advantages of the Maekake apron

It is not surprising that the apron became such a success in Japan. The apron can easily be tied around the hips using a strip of fabric. In addition, anyone can wear it regardless of body shape, without restricting movement, while also protecting clothing from dirt. And if desired, logos can be painted onto the fabric or pockets can be added to carry tools and belongings.

In Japan, people also say the apron benefits the body. Because it is tied around the hips, it is believed to reduce strain on the lower back during physical work. According to this belief, it helps prevent back pain even when standing for long hours.

Anything Co. turns Japanese aprons into an international success

The Japanese company Anything Co. has sold Maekake aprons since 2005 and successfully put this traditional workwear on the international map. The company collaborates with films such as Ultraman, City Hunter, and Godzilla by printing illustrations from the movies onto the aprons. One of Anything Co.’s aprons even appears in the James Bond film No Time to Die.

The company wanted to make the apron appealing to younger generations, and clearly succeeded. Anything Co. now operates branches in the United States, Germany, France, and Italy and sells the aprons in 30 different countries. To support this international growth, the company introduced several adjustments. It started using lighter fabrics and expanded the collection with jackets, bags, pencil cases, and coasters.

The company still produces the aprons in Japan using traditional weaving looms. As a result, a Maekake apron is not cheap. A standard printed apron costs around €62, while aprons created in collaboration with illustrators can cost up to €110. Companies can also print their own logos on the aprons and use them as branded workwear.

It is precisely the combination of craftsmanship, culture, and functionality that makes this garment so attractive to both companies and younger generations. More and more people are moving away from fast fashion and have started appreciating traditional craftsmanship again. Add to that the fact that workwear has been popular for years, and it becomes clear why this garment has become such an international success.
