Florists’ workwear is not as simple as it might seem. These professionals stand all day, deal with dirt, water, and sharp knives, yet they also represent the face of the shop. Their clothing must therefore be both practical and presentable. And let’s not forget: there are also trends in florist workwear. In this article, I’ll tell you all about them.

Florists’ workwear: practical yet representative
You might not think about it, but that beautiful bouquet of red roses requires a lot of effort. Florists often receive their flowers early in the morning, straight from the auction. Since the flowers need to be placed in water, water-repellent clothing is essential. Many florists wear an apron over a shirt or T-shirt to protect their own clothes. However, without a water-resistant fabric, their outfit would still get wet. And nobody wants to walk around soaked all day.
The apron should protect against water but also offer enough pockets. Scissors, knives, and elastic bands are handy tools to keep within easy reach. At the same time, the clothes must be easy to wash so they always look professional. Speaking of that, colour also plays an important role. Florists often choose shades that complement the flowers and plants in the shop, such as earthy browns, greens, or warm red and pink tones.
Florists need slip-resistant shoes
As mentioned earlier, florists work with water all the time. To avoid slipping on wet floors, good shoes with non-slip soles are essential. You could wear sneakers with a sturdy sole, but a serious florist prefers footwear designed for slippery environments.
Since 2022, three levels indicate how slip-resistant a sole is:
-
SRA → tested on ceramic tiles with a diluted soap solution (smooth, wet floor)
-
SRB → tested on steel with glycerol (smooth, oily floor)
-
SRC → combination of SRA + SRB, the highest slip-resistance rating
There are various types of shoes with these classifications, from clogs and slip-ons to sneakers. Because florists walk a lot during the day, steel-toe shoes are not recommended; they’re simply too heavy. Still, a pair with a certified non-slip sole is definitely worth it.
Trends in florists workwear
Like every industry, the agricultural and horticultural sectors also see new workwear trends. Although most florists still wear a stretch pant and shirt with an apron, we now see more and more people choosing boilersuits.

A boilersuit, also called a coverall, is a one-piece garment that covers the entire body. The main advantage is that you don’t have to think about what to wear to work. Just add a pair of shoes and a shirt or T-shirt underneath, and you’re ready to go. More companies now embroider their logo or a fun matching quote on these suits. And let’s be honest: they look pretty stylish too.
So next time you buy a bouquet of roses, take a moment to notice what your florist is wearing. It’s always fun to see the choices they make when it comes to workwear and shoes.
Best,
Aileen
