Cabin crew often work long hours, especially on long-haul flights. During these flights, they need to rest between shifts. That is why aircraft include special crew rest areas where they can sleep. Many airlines provide a flight attendant pajama for these moments. But this is not just about comfort, it also serves another purpose.

Flight attendant pajama
Because these pajamas are only worn when cabin crew go to sleep, there is a good chance you have never seen them before. If you are curious what they look like, the videos below show examples of pajamas worn by Emirates and KLM cabin crew.

Why cabin crew receive a flight attendant pajama
Of course, receiving pajamas from your employer is convenient, especially when you need to sleep during work. This usually happens on long-haul flights. However, crew members can also bring their own sleepwear. That is why some airlines do not provide pajamas, and crew members simply use their own.
But wearing your own pajamas has one important drawback: in an emergency, passengers cannot immediately recognize you as a member of the crew. As shown in the videos above, both Emirates and KLM add clear markings to their pajamas. Emirates places “Crew” on the back, while KLM uses “KLM Crew”.
A flight attendant once explained to me that these pajamas are not just a perk from the employer. In an emergency, there is no time to change clothes. Passengers need to instantly recognize who is part of the cabin crew. When you wear personal sleepwear, passengers can easily mistake you for another traveler. In stressful situations, it becomes difficult to convince people that you are a flight attendant.
In short, flight attendant pajamas do not only serve as sleepwear, they also function as workwear in emergency situations.
Best,
Aileen
