False eyelashes: not always allowed in the workplace

False eyelashes at work are not always allowed. In recent years, beauty treatments for lashes have exploded in popularity. Besides the classic false lashes you can apply yourself, there are now lash extensions, lash lifts, lash fillers, lash botox, and many more options. But that raises the question: false eyelashes at work, allowed or not? After all, not every workplace welcomes these beauty enhancements. For instance, the U.S. Air Force recently reversed its earlier decision to allow lash extensions.

So, which employers are okay with falsies and where should you be more careful? In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know.

False eyelashes: not always allowed in the workplace

Are false eyelashes allowed at work?

Let’s start with the question: why might employers have an issue with a fresh set of lashes?

The most common reason why employers don’t allow false lashes at work has to do with hygiene regulations. For example, surgical teams may ban them because you’re working in an environment with lots of sterile materials. And since false lashes can carry infections, some employers worry they might be brought into the operating room. That said, not every hospital is equally strict about this. The hospitality industry also has concerns. Some employers, like McDonald’s and Starbucks, fear that lashes might fall into food or drinks. And, of course, that’s not exactly hygienic.

The U.S. Air Force’s policy for false eyelashes at work

Hygiene isn’t the only factor, safety and representation matter too. In 2021, the U.S. Air Force updated its dress code to permit natural-looking false lashes for female pilots. But they enforced strict rules: no bright colors, dramatic styles, or lengths over 14 millimeters.

Later, the Air Force reversed this policy. Now, personnel may only wear lashes for medical reasons, and only if they’re 12 millimeters or shorter. The updated rule promotes a uniform appearance and makes enforcement easier.

More recently, the Air Force announced that they’ve reversed the lash policy once again. From now on, lashes may only be worn for medical reasons, and only if they are no longer than 12 millimeters. The change is intended to promote a more uniform appearance and simplify enforcement of the policy.

Tips for wearing false eyelashes at work

Are you a fan of fluttery lashes and want to avoid problems at work? Here are a few tips:

  • Keep them neat and clean. Gaps or crooked placement look messy and unprofessional.

  • Always carry a small tube of lash glue. If a lash starts peeling off, you’ll be able to fix it quickly.

  • Aim for balance. Apply a little mascara to your lower lashes to match the top. Stick to moderate length and thickness for a natural look.

  • Got a job interview coming up? Ask about lash policies beforehand. Don’t assume they’re allowed. Better safe than sorry. Tip: check my article with 4 cosmetic tips for online job interviews.

  • Treat your lashes like accessories. If you wear bold lashes, consider skipping other eye-catching items like earrings or necklaces. That way, your lashes stay the focus without overwhelming your look.

Warm regards,
