Dark blue uniforms have been popular for a long time. Whether it is the police, aviation, firefighters, formal office suits or airline uniforms, this color appears everywhere. In this article, I explain why so many companies choose dark blue.

Why dark blue creates trust
The first reason relates to the psychology behind colors. Every color communicates something and dark blue is associated with trust, calmness, authority and reliability. These are exactly the qualities that matter in the workplace.
This does not mean that a completely dark blue uniform is always the best choice. Every profession faces different challenges and goals. Research has shown that police officers wearing fully dark clothing are associated with strength, but can also trigger negative feelings. Since police officers need to maintain calm and order, that may not be the best color choice. Researchers therefore recommend combining dark blue trousers with a light blue shirt.
Practical advantages of dark blue uniforms
Besides the fact that people associate dark blue with positive workplace qualities, the color also offers practical advantages. Stains are less visible and dark blue combines easily with other colors. In the photos above, you can see how it works together with red, light blue, white, grey, gold and yellow. These are completely different colors, yet they still match well with dark blue.
Another advantage is that dark blue uniforms suit almost everyone. Black is often just a bit too dark and can make some people look pale. Dark blue is slightly softer and works better with different skin tones.
Tradition
Besides the psychological and practical advantages of the color, many organizations also choose dark blue because of tradition. This is especially visible in public services such as the police and fire service, but also in the suits worn by politicians.
In many of these professions, tradition matters more than introducing a completely new uniform color. Tradition communicates stability and reliability, which reinforces the psychological associations linked to dark blue. You can also see this in pilot uniforms. These often remain dark blue regardless of the colors worn by cabin crew. Cabin crew collections may change every few years, but for pilots companies usually only move a button or change the color of the tie. And that makes sense, because pilots literally hold people’s lives in their hands. Many airlines therefore consider a stable appearance important.
I completely understand why companies choose dark blue uniforms. But after spending 11 years looking at countless suits and workwear collections, I sometimes find it a little boring. Then again, not every profession suits a bold or unique color. And that is okay.

Aileen
