Discovering the Carhartt archive: iconic workwear and hidden details

Carhartt posted the first mini video on Instagram in late August. Right away, it revealed the reason behind the series’ name: everyone entering the archive must wear gloves to prevent oil from fingers damaging the historic items. Moreover, an interesting detail is that every piece shown in the series is still available for purchase today, albeit updated with modern details and materials.

The oldest piece in the Carhartt archive: the 1900 Bib Overall

The debut video features the iconic Bib Overall, dating back to 1900. It’s the oldest garment in the archive and still instantly recognizable.

Iconic work pants from 1953: B01 Double-Fronts

The second video spotlights the B01 Double-Front pants from 1953. This pair appears to be in significantly better condition than the older overalls.

A winter classic from the Carhartt archive: Detroit Jacket (1859)

In episode three, viewers get a glimpse of the Detroit Jacket, a winter coat from 1859. This classic is still sold today, although with an updated lining. Judging by the comments, many fans would love to see the original lining return.

Rugged design from 1932: Forestry Dux hunting jacket

Episode four features a rugged hunting coat with gorgeous close-up visuals that highlight its craftsmanship.

A jump to the ’90s: Cape Coat from 1994

After several early 20th-century pieces, episode five jumps ahead to the 1990s with the Sandstone Cape Coat from 1994.

Chore Coat from 1917: how iconic workwear aged in the Carhartt archive

Episode six returns to the early 1900s with a classic Chore Coat from 1917. Judging by the condition, it was likely worn in a dusty construction environment.

Why the Carhartt archive iconic workwear series deserves more

With Putting on the Gloves, Carhartt delivers a compelling visual series that celebrates the legacy of workwear. However, the videos feel too brief.

Many garments clearly have rich backstories. Where they were worn, why they were designed a certain way, and how they evolved. Sharing these stories would make the Carhartt archive even more meaningful to fans and collectors. While the short format works well on social media, it leaves you wanting more. Hopefully, these mini clips are just a teaser for something bigger.

It’s clear that Carhartt has more to share. A longer documentary or expanded digital series could give this iconic workwear archive the attention it truly deserves.

And if that day comes? I’ll be here to write about it.

Best regards,

Aileen
