AI construction site helmet detection: how technology spots missing PPE

AI construction site helmet detection is becoming an increasingly discussed tool for improving safety on building sites. The construction sector has long been known as one of the working environments with the highest number of occupational accidents. One method to improve safety is the use of AI. With special construction site helmet detection systems, the technology can warn supervisors when someone is not wearing a helmet.

The same principle can also apply to other personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety vests. But what are the advantages and disadvantages of such systems, and will they really make construction sites safer?

Construction sites account for many workplace accidents

It has long been known that construction sites are among the least safe workplaces. In Europe, the construction sector accounts for about a quarter of all workplace accidents. In the United States the percentage is slightly lower at around 20 percent, but the number remains high. And not everyone escapes with just a bruise or a broken bone. In 2023, a total of 1,075 construction workers in the United States died while working. The most common causes were falls (36.5 percent), being struck by an object (10 percent), and electrocution (8.6 percent).

These figures show that safety deserves serious attention in this sector. Personal protective equipment plays a crucial role. A well-fitted helmet can sometimes mean the difference between life and death.

Because of the large number of accidents in construction, researchers have been experimenting with methods to make these environments safer for years. In 2020, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in Mumbai already published findings on deep learning techniques capable of detecting PPE on construction sites. Deep learning is a method in which a machine teaches itself to recognise patterns, similar to how humans learn. This allows computers to learn to identify PPE.

In the study mentioned above, the system categorised images as Safe, NotSafe, NoHardHat and NoJacket. Researchers used 2,509 images taken from videos recorded on several construction sites. The focus was mainly on helmets and safety vests.

The researchers found that the system correctly classified people in 96 percent of the cases. The images above illustrate how the system uses colours to show which category a worker falls into.

 

AI detection of PPE on construction sites is evolving

Several studies have since explored how accurate AI detection methods can be in identifying PPE on construction sites. Researchers in Saudi Arabia recently researchers showing how quickly the technology has advanced. Modern systems can detect PPE, or the absence of it, within 7.3 milliseconds. Previously this took around 170 milliseconds. Detection accuracy has also improved to 96.9 percent.

Like earlier studies, this research used a deep learning system capable not only of recognising PPE but also of sending warnings. That feature may ultimately prove to be the most important.

These deep learning systems may sound like good news. They could improve safety and reduce the need for workers to constantly monitor whether colleagues are wearing PPE. If a system works this accurately, the main challenge becomes ensuring that alerts reach the right people quickly.

Still, the issue is not as simple as it seems. Can workers legally be filmed all day on the job? Can the system recognise different colours of helmets? How should privacy be protected, and where should the line be drawn? The answers will differ depending on both the workplace and the country. With privacy laws becoming increasingly strict, implementing such systems may be more complicated than expected.

One thing is clear, however. The time when a forgotten helmet could only be spotted by a human inspector may slowly be coming to an end.
