One of the biggest annoyances for people heading to work is discovering that their clothes are wrinkled. Wrinkles give an unkempt appearance, and that’s something you want to avoid. Fortunately, you don’t have to iron to look neat. In this article, I share laundry expert Mike Nemeroff’s 9 tips for wrinkle-free clothing. I’ll also tell you how I personally avoid having to iron.

1. Ice cubes for wrinkle-free clothing

Need to get rid of wrinkles quickly and have a dryer? Put your clothes in the dryer for 15 minutes on the hottest setting and toss in a few ice cubes. According to Nemeroff, the combination of cold ice cubes and hot temperatures acts like a steam press to smooth out your clothes. It’s important not to overload the dryer, or this trick won’t work.

2. Vinegar is multifunctional

You may already know that vinegar can work as a fabric softener, but it also helps to make your clothes soft enough that they wrinkle less. Add half to a full cup of white vinegar to your wash cycle, and you’ll save yourself a lot of ironing. An added bonus is that it’s gentler on sensitive skin.

3. Hang clothes the right way

After taking the laundry out of the washing machine, Nemeroff advises hanging the clothes immediately. Shake them out well, smooth them with your hands, and let gravity do its work. It’s also worth investing in good hangers if you want to avoid ironing.

4. Steaming clothes

If the wrinkles are still stubborn, it’s a good idea to use a handheld steamer. This works faster than an iron, according to the laundry expert. Don’t have one? Hang the clothes in the bathroom while you shower. The steam from the hot water helps remove wrinkles from your clothes.

5. Roll instead of fold

If you don’t have space to hang your clothes in your closet, you can also roll them. This creates fewer wrinkles than folding. It also seems to save space, and you can see your options more easily. The chances of a shirt or pants getting lost in the back of the stack are much smaller.

6. The wet towel trick

Instead of ironing, you can lay the wrinkled clothing flat and place a damp towel on top. Then smooth it out with your hands. According to Nemeroff, your body heat works like an iron.

7. Fabric softener from a bottle

As mentioned earlier, fabric softener is a great tool to use when you want to avoid wrinkles in your clothes. Don’t have time to run a load of laundry and hang it up? You can also apply fabric softener directly to the clothing. Mix one part fabric softener with three parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the mixture on the wrinkled areas and smooth the fabric. Then, let it air dry overnight, and by the next day, the wrinkles should be gone.

8. Dryer balls

The laundry expert recommends adding a few dryer balls to your dryer. These balls create more space between the clothes, allowing the heat to work more effectively.

9. Press overnight

For stubborn wrinkles, it’s recommended to lightly dampen the wrinkled areas of the clothing. Then roll it up tightly and place it in a plastic bag overnight. According to the laundry expert, when you shake it out the next morning, the wrinkles should be gone.

9 tips from the laundry expert for wrinkle-free clothes

I wasn’t familiar with most of these tips, but I do have experience with good hangers and smoothing clothes with my hands.

Since I have a walk-in closet, I have the luxury of hanging all my clothes. The only items folded in the closet are sturdy pants. As soon as my tops come out of the washing machine or dryer, I immediately hang them on a hanger. This also saves a lot of effort when they’re still wet, as I don’t have to hang them on a drying rack, then take them down, fold them, or hang them in the closet.

If there are still wrinkles, I sometimes hang the clothes near the bathroom radiator. When it’s warm, it often helps remove the wrinkles. Usually, my body heat helps smooth out the wrinkles in my blouses fairly quickly. Thankfully, because I prefer to avoid my iron as much as possible.

What do you do to avoid wrinkled clothes?

Best regards,
Aileen
