With these warm days, we’re more likely to dress lightly. But what’s the best thing to do when you suddenly realize your neckline is a bit too deep at work? How can you prevent this, and what’s the best way to fix it on the spot? In this article, I’ll give you 5 solutions for dealing with a deep neckline at work.
How to prevent a deep neckline
Prevention is, of course, better than cure. So here are a few tips to help you avoid showing too much cleavage:
- Once you’ve gotten dressed, it’s smart not to only check your outfit while standing in front of the mirror. Try bending forward as well to see if a deep neckline appears. After all, you don’t just stand still at work, you move around. And suddenly, more can become visible than you intended.
- The same goes for arm movements. Gently swing your arms back and forth in front of the mirror to see if that reveals more cleavage.
- Whether or not a neckline becomes too revealing doesn’t just depend on your clothes, but also on your bra. One bra might accentuate it, while another makes it much less noticeable. So think carefully about the type of bra you wear to work.
- Is the neckline of your top really low but you still want to wear it to work? Then consider layering a tank top with a horizontal neckline underneath.
- Everything might look fine, but if you’re someone who likes to be prepared for the unexpected, I recommend keeping one or two safety pins in your purse or desk drawer. These pins are your best friend if your neckline suddenly turns out to be too low.

5 easy ways to cover a low neckline in the workplace
Already at work and realize your neckline is just a bit deeper than you’d like? Here are 5 quick fixes you can use right away:
- The safety pin is the quickest and easiest solution if you’re wearing a V-neck. Use it to bring the neckline up by fastening the left and right sides of the fabric together.
- Don’t have a safety pin, but happen to have a bobby pin in your hair? That can work too. A few years ago, I wrote an article explaining how I used a bobby pin to tidy up my neckline. It shows exactly how to do this step by step.
- I already mentioned the influence your bra can have on your neckline. While you usually can’t just switch bras at work, there are sometimes ways to adjust them on the spot. If your bra has pads, for example, you can remove them in the restroom.
- No pads in your bra or still too much cleavage showing after removing them? Then try loosening the shoulder straps a little. Your bust will be a bit less supported, but also less pushed up, making it less visible.
- Got a compact of matte powder in your bag? It’s not a bad idea to dab a bit on your chest. After all, shiny skin stands out more than matte skin.
Not all deep necklines at work are the same
Finally, I want to emphasize that every neckline, woman, job, and employer is different. In one place, showing a little more might feel fine, while in another, it might not. What matters most is that you dress in a way that makes you feel confident.
